PEKING

I usually never feel the ethnically inspired pride of my Asian roots.
Nationalism and patriotism is so passe, so 1940's, so WW1 and 2. Yay for diasporas and globalization!
So what if I'm Chinese, 1.2 billion people can also say that. What makes being Chinese so special.

The 2 times I've ever felt a deep sense of that pride was once during the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics and....

when I passed through the gates of Forbidden City with Mao's eternal eyes gazing toward Tiananmen Square. This was where my country was formed, this was where in 1949 the PRC was created and finally unified. This is where the Chinese in my Chinese Canadian ethnicity was formed.

Regardless of politics and even human rights violations for that matter, this is where my history was formed.
